リヒャルト・シュトラウスが1888年にミュンヘンで作曲を開始し、1889年に完成させた3作目の交響詩。自身の病弱な体質や死の危機に直面した心境を音化した作品であり、完成後にアレクサンダー・リッターが作詞した詩が題名となった。1890年にシュトラウス自身の指揮で初演された。
